Graphic communications is the industry that puts words and images on thousands of items you see every day: billboards, web sites, candy wrappers, CDs, T-shirts, textbooks, and your favorite publications. It is an industry with opportunities for all talents – artistic, technical, interpersonal, managerial, and entrepreneurial.

In an effort to promote the many exciting career opportunities within the graphic communications industry, and showcase the extraordinary talent of our youth, the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) sponsored a 2009 National Student Design Competition, themed “Careers in Graphic Communications…Imagine the Possibilities!” This competition challenged students to design and produce a marketing product that could be used to encourage young people to investigate the many exciting career opportunities in the graphic communications/printing industry.

The competition was open to all students attending secondary or post-secondary institutions, and studying in a graphic communications/printing, advertising, graphic design or interactive media program. Students entered individually or in teams of up to three members.

First place winners and their instructors received a two-day all-inclusive paid trip to attend PRINT 09 in Chicago, IL.  In addition, they received a $2,000 award presented during PRINT 09 Career Awareness Day, September 16, 2009. The second place winners were awarded $1,500, and the third place winners received $1,000.
